The Sybil Series derives its name from classical literature, and is inspired by the mythological ancient Greek female oracles, known as Sibyls, whose prophecies emerged in layered riddles. At once feared and revered, the Sibyls embodied autonomy and intellect in its highest state. In a nod to Lola’s Nigerian Yoruba heritage, the bead, a traditional symbol of royalty, is represented by the rounded scalloped forms that make up the frame around which delicate gold filament is meticulously intertwined. This motif - the interplay of rounded strength and fragile, taught lines - is a study in contrast and contradiction. Motion vs movement, heft vs weightlessness, strength vs fragility are all explored in this series.
